Bob,
I've never experienced this 'goosenecking', so I really can't comment. My biggest problem is the slugs and snails. I think the French left them here after Napoleans retreat! They tend to attack the spikes at night and they then collapse the next day.
I have had plants suddenly look sickly, which I have attributed to over watering. I am still learning to mix the proper compost for my climate. I'm at about 80% gravel/lava/sand to 20% organics. I plan to start dusting with dolomite and see if this helps.

you are further along than I am: Remember I just moved to a new garden.
I am just planting most of the plants I need for this work and still
looking for many. I built a sand bed last fall and stocked it with what
I could find from the Aril Society. It proved to work very well but I
had some problems last spring. I had Andromache for 5 beautiful buds
but just before they opened the stalk about a half inch below the bud
went limp and the bud laid over. Someone refered to this as goosnecking
and I I not sure of the cause. Nevertheless many of the buds on arils
did it before I lefty for convention and my hopes of collecting pollen
were shattered. Wel theres always next year.
