Hi all,
I'll be sending this to other forums too, but it sort of involves species
Iris, and I thought somebody here might have an answer.
I have been trying to track down as many cultivars of pure or potentially
pure tetraploid species ancestry as possible (pure being a relative term, any
tetraploid TB except I. croatica will do). Anyway, it's been a slow and
confusing process, since many of the parentages appear to be unrecorded, or
likely recorded incorrectly. I know that the SIGNA checklist has a lot of
these already, but some of those with uncertain parentage just have to be seen
in person to see if I. pallida or I. variegata (the most likely "other" parents)
were really involved or not. Also, I am going beyond the first generation,
and anything that does not pull in other species along the way still
qualifies.
This brings me to my first puzzle. Right off the bat 'Miss Willmott' (is it
still growing anywhere?) and 'Kashmir White' are puzzling. I have not
flowered 'Kashmir White' yet, but it looks to be quite likely or pure wild
tetraploid ancestry. If so, the next generation (I've found a few so far)
has possibilities too. I'm assuming no further documentation of their
parentage has been found?
I'm also curious if the parentage of 'Santa Clara' is known, since it
doesn't seem to be in the AIS Checklist?
Thanks,
Dave
