That's one way it gets stratified naturally.  Of course the other is to actually fall on the ground.  Either way the seed should be fine, unless something else has happened like fungus or critters.  There is a slim chance that if your temperatures are too extreme that this could kill the seed as well.

Can anyone tell me if leaving seed which I am sure was mature in the pods out until after frost would affect the viability of the seed. I can't see how it would, but...
