I suspect Iris attica is more like a Zone 9 plant. When I tried to grow it, it died at the slightest cold snap. I really can't say for sure but my experience was a bad one here in Zone 6, Ohio.

Laurie; One of the first steps in understanding species is to find out where they grow in the wild. Iris attica is from Greece. It grows fairly near the Seacoast as well as around some of the ancient ruins and on Mt parnasus. In the mountains it may get some cold but probably not a lot. It is probably hardy to zone 7 and it is not surprising that it would germination with just cold water. Freezing might actually kill it.
