There used to be at least one clone of tetraploid I. tectorum, but I
don't know if it is still around. Anyone know about it?

Walter,
It's good to see that another person is interested in this idea. And
I'm glad to see that you're finally getting the opportunity to really
get started -- especially after waiting 20 years.
I think a tetraploid I. tectorum would be a great help in jump-
starting a crested/bearded fertile family. I've read about a
tetraploid clone of tectorum, but have never found a source for it.
Hopefully this season, I can generate a big enough batch of tectorum
seeds for a decent conversion attempt (I'm planning on using
trifluralin at the "just germinated seedling" stage.) If anyone has a
protocol for this type of process, I would love to read more about it.
As for crossing at the diploid stage, I'll warn you to expect lots
of "balloon pods" and aborted seeds. You'll have to be persistent.
For instance, I don't think any of the crosses (over a dozen
different beardeds) I tried last season resulted in viable seeds; but
certain parents seemed to have better developed seeds than others. I
may be an optimist, but I think we will find a diploid that will
cross rather easily with tectorum (if we keep looking).
Until then, good luck to you. And keep in touch about your progress.
Take care, Tom
P.S. If you want to see my crested/bearded hybrid check the "Photos"
section of this iris-species group. (There are five pictures in a
folder "Tom's Iris Pictures", in folder "Tectorum X Bearded"). The
hybrid is similar to 'Paltec', but bigger and with differences in the
foliage. All I need to do is compose an accurate description to
finish registering it. Then I'm hoping that "Iris City Gardens" is
still interested in trying it out and introducing it.
