Re: setosa, hookeri, tridentata, var. canandensis and var. arctica


My understanding is that tridentata does not geogrpahically overlap with 
any of the other species you mentioned.  The others have all been lumped 
together under setosa at one time or another.  Tridentata and setosa have 
always been separate from each other.

It's my personal opinion that tridentata is more closely allied with 
(related to) Louisiana irises rather than I. setosa.  This is based on 
geography, growth habit, cultural requirements, as well as seed morphology 
(I think 'morphology' is the right word).

Scientifically I can't adequately describe the differences between the 
flowers of setosa & tridentata... but I would never be able to confuse them 
when in bloom.  They are distinctly different!   There are some great
