Re: General garden catalogs

Just as an FYI.  'Zebra' is the variegated form of pallida that is yellow and green and 'Argentea' is the variegated form that is white and green. The name 'Zebra' was popularized by Lloyd Austin in the 60's for what is legitimately registered as 'Pallida Variegata'. The registered name 'Zebra' was actually applied much earlier to a pallida with flowers that were white and had blue/purple stripes and green foliage. But Austin's was a great promoter and the legitimately registered plant which probably had died out by then was replaced by the yellow/green variegated plant. Nonetheless 'Zebra' and 'Argentea' shoul never be used as synonyms for one plant. They seem to have different cultural needs. 'Argentea' seems to prosper in the western USA while 'Zebra does better in the East.
