Chuck and David;
I find it interesting what Chuck is doing and I also agree with David about species, but let me cast a different light on the subject. If we think of purple flower color as a trait, many species share that trait. While I tend to believe that a plicata pattern was first seen in pallida, there is no reason to believe it may not be a fairly basic set of genes that lies usually unexpressed in several species and perhaps in all bearded Irises. Each species may dramatically effect how this plicata set of genes is expressed and we may not always recognize it, especially when it dramatically altered by other sets of genes intrinsic to other species. The MDB ‘Scribe for example appears to be a plicata but I do not remember either variegata or pallida to be in its background. Perhaps the plicata set of
genes was present before variegata, pallida, pumila, and lutescens diverged as separate species. I have not been able to follow this discussion except for the last two messages so I hope I am not repeating something that has already been said.
