As I remember, I. dicotoma is native to the
Mongolian high deserts. They've survived easily in our zone 4b without special
care as long as the ground freezes solid before too much snow.
In my experience, they do best in average soil
where they receive some water but have good drainage. Wet feet leads quickly to
rot and they aren't long lived (only a year or two) unless divided frequently.
Moving them every other year seems to be a nice compromise between their needs
and my schedule.
I've found that they also do best planted closely
so the tall stems can help support each other, otherwise staking them works
well.
