Christy,
thanks for doing the trial. That is a considerable amount of time,
when something could go wrong!
A hint on printing in general: have 4 pages printed for a folding
format, two per side. I do this for producing printed newsletters and
it costs very little, about €0.50 per A3 page. prices and quality vary
greatly from shop to shop, though.
Like you, I would prefer to cuddle-up with my reading material. I am
hoping the current 'kindl' technology will be made more user friendly
and will become the take-to-bed digital book fo the future. I
sometimes take my laptop to bed, but it is less comfortable and the
screen does have a high energy requirement, which digi-book technology
doesn't have. Smaller laptops are available, designed essentially for
this purpose, and the prices are falling like shooting stars on a warm
summer evening. (you can tell we are under snow!)
Ciao für now,

Jamie,
It took around 8 minutes to download but I have a good
connection this morning. That's not always the case and pdf files
(large ones) will lock my pc up about 1/2 the time.
I'm not sure I'd print it out... 28 pages in color, if I want a
hard copy, isn't very affordable using the printer I have. The other
down side is that I don't usually have much time, especially outside of
winter, to sit at a computer and read. (My preference, especially when
the power is out, is to curl up with a hot cup of coffee and anything
printed till it gets too dark.)
On the plus side, I can see more images in color online than
most regions could afford to put in print.

Re: [iris-species] digital SIGNA bulletin?
Anita,
a very nice production! I like the layout. The type is large enough
to read easily, although I prefer a sans serif, such as Verdana. This
is another advantage of an electronic document: one can enlarge it in
the screen to a readable size! I hate to admit it, but my eyes are
going and I am certainly not alone
>:o .
OK, everyone, this gives a good example of what is possible and it is
only a starting point! The technology is racing foreward. It is
almost daunting. For me, it took less than 10 secs. to download, but I
do have DSL. Can anyone try it with dial-up for a comparison?

I have been putting my Newletter for region 4 up on the region
4 site for quite a while so that I can print in black and White and
have full color for those that want it. It can be downloaded and
printed or kept in a file. Using CutePDF and MS Publisher I can
compress the photographs with little deterioration and a publisher file
of 10 - 34MB becomes a PDF of 1.7 - 2.8 MB.
Here is a link to Decembers http://www.irisregion4.com/publications/DEC09comp.pdf
I hope this helps
