Re: Reblooming Spuria irises

Jim,
I have not heard of or seen such an iris, but I sure wouldn't mind such an iris as spurias tend to do fairly well here.  They would really be a great addition to garden in general.

Subject: [iris-species] Reblooming Spuria irises

Posted for Dr. James W. Waddick; I recently had an inquiry from Madeline Bullock of the Beardless Iris Group of the BIS regarding the possibility of breeding for reblooming Spuria irises. Apparently an article in SIGNA (1997) by Clarence Mahan and an even earlier SIGNA article (1971) by Roy Davidson suggest that rebloom is common. Even Dykes is said to have had a form of I spuria that rebloomed floriferously. The species is a spuria known variously as: I autumnalis and I gueldenstadtiana, but these are thought to be synonyms of I spuria ssp halophila. Not just halophila, but a strain that blooms in late summer/September. And by 'rebloom' this is a full bloom event, not a few flowers or stems. Has anyone observed this strong rebloom in I halophila? Anyone growing such a reblooming spuria or know of named reblooming cultivars? Thanks for your input. Jim Waddick -- Jim Murrain 8871 NW Brostrom Rd Kansas City, MO 64152-2711 USA
