Anja,
The californicae are a little different to germinate. They are a cool
temperature germinator. I experimented with a few of these, a while
back, and here is what works: Put the seeds in the toe of an old pair of
panty hose. You can put several different seed lots in, just tie each
off in its own individual space, and be sure to keep a record. Then,
hang the panty hose in your toilet tank. Every time you flush, the seeds
get fresh oxygenated water. After a month, sow the seed and then keep
them at around 50 degrees F/10 C. In a few weeks they will start to
germinate. These directions were from the Pacific Coast Iris society,
they have been passed around for a few years. It really works. In my
experience, it seems to be important that the temperature is around 50,
and it takes some time at that temperature. If the toilet thing does not
appeal to you, you can just put the panty hose in a jar and change the
water daily, but it really is easiest the other way.
