Irises that fall into multiple categories are only listed in one of those categories in registration because that is the category chosen by the hybridizer in which they think it should compete for awards. An Irises is not allowed to compete in multiple categories. That does not mean that the Iris is any less a member of a second class but just that it has been chosen to be represented in the one.

Bob,

this is the case in many plant classifcations, which may no longer be timely. The AHS is considering changing registrations to allow multipal listings (may already have been done), as many plants do fill multiple classifications, especially for exhibition.  I find classification a tedious subject as it really is extremely subjective. At a time when many didn't understand much on genetics, this may have been more meaningful, but most hybridizers have a much deeper understanding and realize all categories have massive grey areas.

Sean: I would not even bother answering your questions if I thought there was no chance for a learning experience. I wish your tone would be more inquisitive, ratherÂthan being an inquisition. I have tried to be respectful of your point of view and explain why I might differ. I apologize if I have not come across that way. The AIS classification system is not perfect, but it is also not just one person's ideas, or even a select group. It takes a long time to change many things because many people contribute to making the decisions.

I really don't understand you, here. I've not found Sean to be inquisitory at all. I rather like his direct retoric and out of the box approach. To me, this means he is thinking, not simply accepting the situation. You and others have led him to the waters and he not only drinks from them, he questions their origin. Good stuff, in my book.
