Re: designations in seed listings

Tom,

It is complicated but you have it. Yes to the first question. The simplest way to list your hypothetical seeds would be "I. pumila ex SIGNA" and the seed lot #. To be complete you could repeat the description from that lot number, but we seldom see that complex a description and by this time they are pretty far from Armenia. :) In any case, you can always contact the contributor for more information about seeds.

Subject: [iris-species] designations in seed listings

Hi folks -

Just a quick question about the way seeds are identified in our seed exchange (and others). My understanding is that the identification refers to the seeds, not the parent plant. For example

I. reticulata ex 'J. S. Dijt'

would mean the seed being offered was open pollinated seed harvested from a plant of 'J. S. Dijt'. (Not that the plant producing the seed was raised from open pollinated seed of JSD.) Is this correct?

If I collect I. missouriensis seed from a wild stand in Santa Fe County, I should list this as

I. missouriensis, cw Santa Fe County, New Mexico

Correct?

If I grow some of these seeds myself, then collect their seeds for the seed exchange, would these be

I. missouriensis ex Santa Fe County, New Mexico

This year, I got some I. pumila seeds from Jurasek. He listed them as garden collected seed "I. pumila ex Sevan Lake, Armenia". Does this mean the garden plants from which the seeds were obtained were either collected in Armenia or raised from seed collected in Armenia? If I raise seedlings from these seeds and collect their own seed, how should this be listed?

Thanks - this ought to be simple, but it sometimes confuses me.

Tom
