Re: Re: Species Fertility

Thanks for info.

Flavescens is a species cross. I got 3 out of 4 takes on it last year
using MTB pollen. 4-5 seeds per pod.

What I'm looking for is any evidence of a bearded species
self-incompatibility gene. I'm suspecting most self infertility we
see in bearded plants is a chromosomal unbalance level. To rule that
out we would need to identify a Self infertility system.

Not a true species, but I played with Iris x flavescens this year. It
is remarkably stubborn to produce offspring even though it produces
normal fluffy pollen. Out of dozens of seed pods, I only collected 3
seeds total. They were all from out-crosses. All the other pods were
balloons (most of them were from I. x flavescens pollen). As a pollen
parent I didn't get any successful takes on other species/hybrids.

Are there any bearded species that have self infertility?
