karyotypes, kashmiriana etc.

I posted the following to Iris-species around 10:30 am yesterday but
the message never appeared on the list. The text follows:

A further reference to Michael Foster's garden and species that were
growing there occurs in TWOI, p. 52, in Melba Hamblen's chapter, "The
Drama of Iris Development."

Melba says, citing Randolph, that growing in Foster's garden
were "*I. trojana,* *cypriana,* Amas, and three color forms of
*kashmiriana,* one of which was white."

She adds on the following page, "The parentage of two of Foster's
important introductions, Kashmir White and Miss Willmott, has been
subject to speculation for many years. Generally it has been assumed
that *kashmiriana* was one parent, with supporting evidence uncovered
by Randolph when he studied Foster's original records and notebooks,
preserved at the headquarters of the Linnean Society in London."

I hope this adds some significant information to the ongoing
discussion.

A correction:
My finger slipped when I made reference to Randolph in a post
yesterday. I wrote "L. R. Randolph" by accident. That should
read "L. F. Randolph." He was often called by the "F" part of his
name--"Fitz."
