*Iris germanica* SIGNA lot C035

I'm glad to see Ken's photos from this SIGNA seed lot. I have four
or five seedlings from this same lot, but as they were slow to
germinate only one clone is large enough to have bloomed this year.
Unfortunately the potential bud either froze during the winter or
spring, or failed for some other reason.

If I do get bloom next spring I'll post a photo so that the variation
among the seedlings can be observed.

The foliage and plant habit of those growing here are more suggestive
of modern tetraploids than diploids.

Since the seedlot had a number of seeds it is unlikely that the
parent plant is a 44-chromosome clone. Apparently there was
sufficient fertility to suggest that the parent is either a normal
diploid or tetraploid, one or the other. Precisely which should be
easily determined--a successful cross with either type should show
which category these seedlings fall into.

I don't have the SIGNA list at hand to check, but the seed source of
C035 should show. I have a vague memory that Don Spoon is the one
who has--or had--the parent plant and was the source of the seeds.

Jim Harrison's suggestion of enlisting universities is an interesting
one. Here in the mountains in western NC we have in the Asheville
area two gardens--a Botanical Garden at UNCA and the NC State
Arboretum. Perhaps one or the other would be interested in having
and maintaining the mountain area iris natives. Both Jim Harrison
and I could contribute collected material if there were interest.

The arboretum does have a few irises--I recall seeing one named TB
clone, a number of *cristata* plantings, but apparently all from the
same clone, and a couple siberians. On these siberians seedpods have
been allowed to ripen and drop seeds, so the named clones probably
are contaminated by uncontrolled seedlings growing among them.
