I have been following the discussion with interest. I've approached the naturalist at one of the nature preserves with an offer of i. versicolor, and i. cristata. I have not received a reply. He is probably the nephew of a county commissioner and at this time is saying "gosh, Unka Walt, what is a verscolor?"
I want to let people see the beauty of specie iris. I passed on a dozen mature versicolor as an inducement to the master gardeners. If the endemic iris can be reestablished in the preserves this would be a start. I would be reluctant to extend the iris to non-endemic varieties.
As soon as my hip improves I want to schedule a meeting with county ag agent and the associated master gardeners. Within my own little bailiwick, I ordered some extra seeds from 2002 leftovers. Time will tell!
