Re: Conservation/source list

I am not sure everyone understands the value of the type of source list I have been talking about. I am interested mainly as a tool for conservation. One can use a resource like the European Hardy Plant Finder (HPF) to determine how precarious a cultivars hold is on cultivation. If out of hundreds of gardens a cultivar is offered by only one than it is probably a pretty rare plant. Google will get you to a source for an individual Iris, and it will also show you how many mentions there are of it. But a list like the (HPF) allows you to see which plants are most rare in cultivation. In that way it suggests plants to small nurseries that may be unique and maybe they would acquire and propagate for sale. This discussion arose because of my interest in national collections for study and conservation. It is only an auxillary point that demonstrates my point of what England and Europe have accomplished and how America has been third world in its efforts. I have been throwing these ideas out to plant groups, societies, and institutions for 20 years and have yet to see anything comparable to what the British have done nationally done in the USA even on a small scale.
