They actually might very well be. There were a lot of plants so I only looked at a few, but I was having trouble finding ANY without pubescent signals. I. versicolor I looked at elsewhere much further north and west (well outside the range of virginica) clearly didn't have pubescent signals - they're often velvety in texture, but you can't see the individual hairs like you can on virginica.

       Those are gorgeous.  Is there anywhere else that Iris virginica and Iris versicolor have been known to naturally hybridize with each other?
