Mark, I'll take a stab at this, although I've never dealt with these in the ground except, like Dennis, to have them freeze. The Dietes do have rhizomes and so dividing and transplanting should work very much like an iris. To be safe I'd cut one large section out and disturb it as little as possible while repotting it. Try some smaller divisions in the ground. I would think the plant would rebound after you get rid of the fire ants. I've had them
invade lots of pots and not lost the plants as a result. Rod From: Mark A. Cook <bigalligator@bellsouth.net> To: iris-species@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2013 12:42 PM Subject: [iris-species] African Iris A short time ago, I lifted a clump of the
yellow African Iris that for some reason did not look happy. I found it to
be infested with Fire Ants. The <self-censored> Fire Ants were
operating in some of the potting mix that it was in when I bought it a couple
years ago. So, I set the Iris in a container I put water in so the
remaining Ants would leave or drown. The Fire Ants were not present when I
purchased the plant.
I wish to divide and replant this Iris in another
location. Do you all have any recommendations on how to do this? I
do not want to lose the Iris. This is not the same plant that is totally
happy and blooms like crazy. Can this poor Iris be saved?
