Invasive species is such a important issue it deserves a great deal of discussion. Most of the really reprehensible candidates have been, like Kudzu and the Multiflora rose, introduced by the millions by the Dept. of Agriculture back in the 30;s 40?s and 50?s. There was also a trend in the 50?s for gardeners to naturalize alien species to make their forests and fields more attractive. Iris pseudacorus was one of the plants that was touted for erosion control by the army core of engineers. It is not unexpected that such mass introductions would not have some effect on native ecosystems. Unfortunately we still don?t learn from our mistakes. The Dept. of Agriculture introduced a mite that carries a virus that was supposed to kill the multiflora roses. Unfortunately it also kills all roses and the native wild roses along with the roses in gardens are being decimated by this new pathogen. When it comes to invasive species animals are a much greater threat than plants.
