Hi all,
First the nomenclatural question. This is a botanical nomenclature
question, not a horticulture/cultivar question. I am wondering if anyone
has ever chosen, in a publication, which name is the proper botanical name
for plants derived from hybridization of I. pallida and I. variegata. From
what I remember the names I. sambucina and I. squalens seem to be the
oldest, and they have equal priority. I. sambucina would have page
priority, if that was still considered of any importance. If somebody has
actually designated one of these as the name of choice, then it is the
legal name for these hybrids. If not, it is still an open question.
Thanks
I've been putting together lists of cultivars of a few species and species
hybrids which are of great interest to me. While many are listed in the
species checklist put out through SIGNA, some are not. Right now I am
looking at I. pallida. It seems that there are several cultivars that are
registered as TB that are pure I. pallida, but which are not listed as the
species.
Anyway, I am including a preliminary list that I've put together, and am
asking for comment. If you know one on the list is definitely not I.
pallida, I'd like to know. If you know of some that aren't on the list,
but are I. pallida, I'd like to know that too. The ones with question marks
are ones I haven't seen nor have I grown them. Most of the rest I've
grown, but a few are called pallida based on reports that seem reliable or
on photos. So, some without question marks may be wrong. I'd love to see
explanations, discussion, opinion, etc. written out too.
I've found that most Iris cultivars that have wholly papery bracts (they
have no green foliaceous portion at all) are indeed I. pallida. The bracts
do not have to be white, but usually are; they are sometimes slightly
brownish. In var. cengialtii they are very brown. Most of them smell of
grape, but I cannot detect this in any of the (few) var. cengialtii that I
grow.
This was thrown together quickly last night, and I didn't have the species
checklist handy to go through (so, I may have missed a few obvious ones).
However, it is a fairly comprehensive list from the notes I've put together
over the last few years. I suspect a few of these cultivars are extinct to
horticulture.
Wait till you see the I. pallida x I. variegata list (not just F1).
Thanks,
Dave
