I have been hunting off and on for a rather well researched article in
SIGNA by Jim Seeden that as I recall gave specifics for differentiating
I. versicolor from I. virginica shrevei. Being in the
middle groound for the two, I paid a lot of attention to identifying
the many plants of both that I had. Of the top of my head, I'd say this
is shrevei--more yellow in the signal, longer standards, etc. but I
think there were some clones I couldn't identify for sure till they had
seed pods, but which had long and which short? I just don't recall.

When I posted pictures of them last year some people questioned if it wasn't Iris virginica instead. Well, I went back last summer to check the seed pods, and as I recall they were smallish, and filled with shiny brown seeds. For me that was sufficient evidence to confirm them as Iris versicolor. However, I got to acquire some of their irises and today they bloomed in my garden. In a million years I wouldn't guess these to be anything BUT virginica (or shrevei). Isn't it true that virginica seeds have a corky coat like Louisianas? How about shrevei seeds? Dennis in Cincinnati ------------------------ Yahoo!
