This is a lumpers and splitters situation. What was called I. ensata
(which turned out to be the earliest name for the Japanese iris) among
other things, was lumped together as series Ensatae, an a multitude of
varieties were lumped as I. lactea. Among the synonyms
according to Mathew are I. biglumis, I.fragrans, l. iliensis, I
moorcroftiana, I oxypetala, I. pallasii. I triflora, I. ensata and
I. lactea var.chinensis. The World of Iris devotes one short
paragraph to it and lists more synonyms, I.doniana and I.
pabularia. Kohlein sticks with the name I. ensata, but says pretty
much the same thing. Many many years ago I wrote something for SIGNA I
expect about the many deifferent iris I grew from seed of various of
