there is most confusing thing with names of Spuria species. Brian
Mathew from England number of species such as carthaliniae, demetri,
halophila, maritima, musulmanica, notha, sogdiana and spuria treat as
subspecies of species spuria. Dr. Rodionenko call it as separate
species. Prof. Zhao Yu-tang from China call sogdiana as var. of
halophila. The habitat of halophila is in East Europe-Romania,
Moldova, Ukraine, North of Caucasus to the west Siberia. Sogdiana
appears in areas of East Caspian, Afganistan, Iran, Pakistan, Kashmir,
in mountains of Kopet Dag, Tian Shan, Mongolia and as Zhao yu-tang
confirm most eastern border of this species are in China. And what is
interesting, that both species in China are of the same height about
20-40cm. Mathew give the height of this one 10-35cm. Of course in
different areas it can vary. Halophila grows higher 40-90cm and it
show, that you have both true species halophila and sogdiana. For us
it is a distinction without difference how to call these species-it is
matter of authorities. You can only enjoy that you have species
(sogdiana) from area which is difficult to reach for many botanists.
From other hand you may do experiments sawing seeds of sogdiana (hand
polinated) and wait for flowers with yellow color. It would be
confirmation that sogdiana and halophila are relatives.
In early about 1960 the staff of our botanical garden working with
irises obtained from Switzerland sibirica seeds and in 1964 she had
seedling of yellow siberian and it grew there for many years. Beeing
retired the staff gave me this plant and allowed to do with it what I
like. I registared it as LITHUANIAN AMBER for her, sawed some seeds
and now have one seedling from it which is violet blue. Why you can
not be succesful to have from seeds Chinese halophila?
