Yes, to my surprise, it's already survived two winters with no extra
care but leaf mulch from a nearby silver maple and is thriving. The
evergreen foliage is always severely damaged, but so is that of Iris
foetidissima, and neither seem to mind much. Related yellow moraeas
are also supposed to be very hardy (M. reticulata has also made it
through one winter here), but I'm hoping other high-altitude species
like M. alpina might survive. Other South African irids that have so
far done well outside for me include Gladiolus papilio, G.
oppositiflorus and Tritonia drakensbergensis. I've had a G. nanus-type
Dutch hybrid outside for nearly ten years.
