Re: SIGNA Seed Photos

I poked around in the lists, myself, and through a process of elimination-- there really are not that many candidates, are there?--concluded that this must be 06B025,  which was described by Mrs. Lankow, the donor, as "alba" and "OP."

I know I ordered it especially because I am intrigued by--but never have grown--Iris 'Innocenza' which I've been told is a white form of Iris variegata.

'Innocenza' is said to be a LÃmon iris from ca.1854, so you have to wonder how the alleged genetic parentage is known. I might check that out some day, do a little research to see if Foster said anything, etc.

Is Iris 'Innocenza' fertile, does anyone know? Are there other "white" forms of this species in circuilation?

I thought they were up there but I did not see them, or thought they were partial.

I will check and see if I recognize the listing. It's unusual that I lost track of the data, but I've had some other things on my mind and the research files are getting un peu voluminous.

Yes, it's a real dollbaby. Beaucoup sassy. Beaucoup interesting little stray hairs.

I'll let you know if I find it.

That's a beautiful iris!  I looked through the lists as far back as 1997 but couldn't find a listing for I. variegata "white form" by any donor.  There were several donations of this species by Harald from '97 to '01, but they just say hand pollinated or viareigata var. pontica.

BTW, all the SIGNA seed lists are available for reference online (from 1991 to 2010): http://signa.org/index.pl?Archives
I haven't added the 2011 list yet.

I've a photo of something very charming I grew from SIGNA seed. Unfortunately I cannot find the appropriate sales list to put its number and date on it.

This was grown several years ago--no problems, sowed the seed when I got it and left it out on the deck through the remaining winter months--and up she came and kept on coming. I added the mature plant to the collection at the Center for Historic Plants in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, where I was revamping the historic Iris collection, and adding a few species. The attached photo was taken there.

It was identified on the sales list as Iris variegata "white form" and I as I recall Mathes was the donor. This would have been within the last decade, so that you may be able to determine its little provenace, if you can find the right list.

Cordially,
