Re: Dietes flavida

I was surprised, too, when my D. grandiflora produced flowers on the previous year's stems.  The short stems bearing the flowers do die after ripening seed, but the main stem produces new branches the next year, which carry the new flowers.

I'm a bit skeptical of bloom on same stalk. Sequence of growth in most
plants is vegetative apical meristem , to floral meristem to death.
After flowering my grandiflora stalk (with seed pod) completely died
when seed pod ripened. On clumps of grandiflora in California and
Florida, I've seen clumps with old dead stalks with seedpods and
fresh new stalks with flowers on same clump.

Probably, but I think people miss out on bloom because of it. It may
not matter so much in warmer climates, but mine are in pots are shy to
bloom. I don't remember where I first read to leave the stalks but it
was probably in SIGNA.

I suppose they cut the stalks off the
grandiflora immediately after bloom at my local conservatory.

Yes, I believe it's a feature of all the Dietes. Certainly
it is for this and grandiflora.

flavida
It has bloomed on the same stalks year after
year.

The flower stalks are actually perennial? Neat!
