Thanks.  This one has large, green, overlapping spathes.  Since it is in a very dry garden and the flowers wouldn't be called small, I think I will rule out prismatica, though the  flowers really are similar. Leaves aren't all that thin and grasslike either.

 

Spurias have those characteristic large, green, overlapping spathes. Iris prismatica is a wetland species with small flowers on very slender stalks and almost grasslike leaves.

I’m not too strong on spurias, and I can see the resemblance to a couple I’ve grown, but what about missouriensis or longipetala?  Not that I’m strong on those either.
