Is he asking about the AIS classification of bearded irises by height? He does not sound like he is asking for a name.
I think that AIS' is the only classification system which relies on height--or height and proportion, actually-- and includes both hybrids and natural species in the categories. Perhaps he is referring to another classification system?
I think it matters that we don't know what this plant actually is.
Is it a natural species brought into cultivation or an early hybrid? The images suggest Iris reichenbachii as I grew it some years ago, although taller. It's at the limit of the height for that species as stated by Mathew.(The Iris, 1889, p.34)
Personally, I'd not go much further on this than "Iris cv. Hort." It's an iris apparently being cultivated as a garden plant, so that much seems sound enough.
Cordially,
AMW

Subject: [iris-species] Fwd: Dwarf, yellow bearded iris
Would someone like to give an opinion on which
botanical name would be most appropriate for
this iris?
My decidedly non-expert opinion - it looks similar
to "that old yellow" that is widespread in gardens
in the U.S., and no one knows quite what variety
it is :-)
Thanks,
Jean

Hello Jean!
At the moment I am working on a new guidebook for our plant collection
at Gamle Hvam museum. I have this dwarf, yellow, bearded iris from a
garden in Oslo, and my question is: What botanical name is most correct
for this plant? It flowers approximately two weeks later than I.
aphylla. The pictures give information about height, coloring etc.
Will Iris chamaeiris-group be correct? I hope you or any of the other
experts call help me in this.
So far we have a "normal" winter here in our county in Norway, but last
fall was extremely wet. I had to dig ditches around some of the
flower-beds to drain them. I really am anxious about how everything will
grow this spring. This summer will be dedicated to raising flower-beds.
Greetings from
Mari in Norway
