I wrote before about my Iris that looked like it was going to be cleistogamous. For nearly a week after its blue petals had already started to extrude from the spathe valves, it expanded just a tiny bit each day. I kept expecting it to be open each day, but no. I watered it, figuring, maybe it needs more water to build up enough internal pressure to open. Then, one day, it expanded to a full 8" wide. The Iris is âScented Berriesâ, and now that two huge flowers are open, its sweet perfume pervades the entire yard. It stands about 3' tall. I planted it in autumn 2011, and this is the first year bloomed. It has a very weird beard â it looks almost like a separate petal. David E. |
