I've got to speak out against bird mesh, especially used near ground level - it is *very* common for snakes to be killed by it. The holes are flexible enough for them to force their way partway through, but the mesh is so fine that it catches on their scales and prevents them from being able to back out. Plastic erosion control mesh is basically the same stuff and also dangerous (and not actually very biodegradable). Even if a snake doesn't seriously cut or strangle itself with the mesh, it will overheat and die if caught out in the sun on a warm day. Chicken wire (and I assume plastic deer fence?) isn't anywhere near as dangerous because the mesh is thicker and less flexible, and gives them something substantial to push off against if they do get stuck.
