iris hunting

A couple weeks ago several people suggested books for me to research in
order to find out where to hunt for local iris populations. Today one of
those books arrived via inter-library loan and sure enough it had exactly
what I was looking for. A listing of all the native Iridaceae (and some
non-natives) and maps of which counties they naturally occur.

Sadly, apparently the only recorded occurrence of Iris fulva was on a
pasture in Mechanicsburg, Ohio and is suspected as not being naturally
occurring. Happily, though, Iris brevicaulis occurs naturally very close
to Cincinnati, so that's the one I'm going to hunt this season (with my
camera only!).
