Hi,
Sorry I have missed so interesting discussion, but I have just returned from
iris hunting in South Russia.
Two years ago I have made some statistical measurement of flowerstalk of
Iris furcata collected in North Caucasus near Stavropol to find a clue to
distinguish furcata and aphylla species. So I can comment G. Rodionenko's
statements.
Need to say, the plants from this population was enough different (much
taller) from those
collected in Armenia for example, but I has not enough material to make
larger conclusion.
GR: Iris furcata differs from I.aphylla:
1. less wide 8-10(15), but more upright leaves;
JP: Leaves of Stavropol plants was really more straight, sickled only at the
ends, but the plants was collected at fruiting stage so at another stages
shape could be different. Leaves of other furcatas are very short so it is
hard to say as straight they are. The shape of aphylla plants depend very
much of growing conditions so width of leaves is not reliable trait.
2. thin and graceful flowerstalk, which have branches not from base,
but from higher than middle of stalk;
JP: Only one reliable trait I found is that furcata's stalk _never_ branches
at rhizome level. It branches higher or lower than middle of stalk and
usually forms only one branch. I tested about 33 samples and started to
think one branch it is another trait but at last found one stalk with two
branches. The length of branch is about equal the length of stalk above
branch so they usually forms "fork".
3. flowers are less in measurements, but of more intensive coloring of
violet-red tones;
JP: Those aren't reliable traits. It depend of clones. I saw a lot of
aphyllas that was smaller, redder and darker than Stavropol furcata.
4. the seed pod 3-4cm long with some flattened top;
5. seeds are less than those of I.aphylla 4-5mm long and 2-3mm wide.
In 1gramme 53-56 seeds (for aphylla - 32-35).
JP: Seeds really are smaller than ones of tetraploid aphyllas.
During all XIX century South Russian aphylla (from Voronezh, Saratov,
Volgograd, Tambov regions) was named as furcata. It was the time when
western botanical gardens received his samples of furcata. It is not
surprisingly when most of them really are aphylla.
Rodionenko's words about better shape of furcata could be true. I was very
impressed when armenian furcata bloomed first time at me. Very accurate and
proportional to plant flower with very small leaves at flowering time. But
certainly it depend of wheather. Next time it was not so beautiful.
The statement that aphylla gives a stalk before leaves is obviously an
error.
