Seems quite interesting to me and you may well be on to something. I've never seen Iris cristata suffer bacterial soft rot here even when planted under conditions more suitable for LA's. Too, we certainly know cristata to actually prefer mulch and shade in it's natural habitat. We only need about two more lifetimes to get irises where they need to be.
Perhaps the reluctance to bloom exhibited by the cross comes from the cristata side. It chooses the conditions under which it prefers to bloom here. Some colonies do not bloom some years but usually increase dramatically in such years.
