Re: Iris setosa

Margarete,

I do not get the pictures either - and i think i need to change that,
but do not know how at the moment. Anyway ...

Our native Iris setosa foliage gets about 18" tall, with the flower
about 24" off of the ground, it is a robust grower and spreads very
well by seed - and could be considered a weed.

I think that the short iris also called I. setosa are also
called 'Canadian I. setosa' here (and are from eastern Canada and the
New England states from what i can figure out.) I think those short
ones are sometimes called I. hallerii (I an not sure my memory is
quite correct on that one??? I am sure there are lots of you that
know the answer to this one.)

That robust foliage I spoke of looks (almost) more like gladiolus
foliage than the siberians that grow here. I am guessing the base of
my leaves are almost an inch wide at the base whereas the siberians
are more like a half inch and much more grass like in looks and "wind
action". Our I. setosa leaves need a strong wind to move much.

I don't know if any of this helps???

where is is perfect transplant weather - calm, overcast and about 60*F
(also perfect for the mosquitoes!!!!!) (and all our May mornings have
been in the 40's - that's way better than the 30's!)

So are there large setosas? And should black gamecock be grassy? Do
I have them mixed. (The blooms on Black Gamecock look like the right
one, and it grows like a weed here which is what I've heard in the
rest of New England so I think I have the right thing)
