Re: Iris pseudacorus
Dennis & all,
I have seen local ponds just choked with pseudacorus (in central
NY state). In the last year, both Horticulture mag & Fine Gardening had
articles on invasive plants, and mentioned this plant. It's a thug, for
sure. Still, I have two or three varieties of it planted in ordinary
garden soil, where there is no danger of it escaping. Last year my clump
of "Sun in Splendor" was a show stopper, very large with beautifully formed
bright yellow flowers.
For those who want to try pseudacorus but are worried about it
taking over, try the hybrids "Chance Beauty" and "Roy Davidson". "Chance
Beauty" is a hybrid with a JI and the flower has that shape, with yellow
flowers & brown markings. It blooms for me late, around July 1, and will
definitely be the center of attention when it flowers. "Roy" looks like a
pretty ordinary pseudacorus; it's not 100% sterile but close to it.
