Iris versicolor vs. virginica (#1 of 2)

Last year I reported on Hamilton County Parks District propagating various
wild flowers of locally native genotype. One of those was Iris
versicolor. When I posted pictures of them last year some people
questioned if it wasn't Iris virginica instead. Well, I went back last
summer to check the seed pods, and as I recall they were smallish, and
filled with shiny brown seeds. For me that was sufficient evidence to
confirm them as Iris versicolor.

However, I got to acquire some of their irises and today they bloomed in my
garden. In a million years I wouldn't guess these to be anything BUT
virginica (or shrevei). Isn't it true that virginica seeds have a corky
coat like Louisianas? How about shrevei seeds?
