For those interested in such things . . . .
.
Signa 01B039 I. perrieri x I. reichenbachii from
Terry Varner bloomed for the first time on May 18th, here, near Geneva,
NY. Just getting pictures into the computer tonight.
This seed was planted late winter 2001 and
took at least 2 years to germinate. It has taken since that time to
reach blooming size. It started very slowly as a seedling - painfully slow -
though growth rate increased substantially of late. It has always been grown in
the pot pictured due to concerns about
our winter drainage outdoors. Since I have a solid track record
of killing off small bearded species with kindness and transplanting, I
now start seed from them in a fairly large pot and leave them on their
own to rough it outdoors. Mother nature's program seems to suit
them just fine - thank you very much !
This seedling's color is a saturated purple to
my eye. The photo is not enhanced. Beard is white
with little or no hint of yellow-carotene. There is a blue / purple
cast to the beard. Likewise, spathes and foliage bases show a purple
tendency. One bloom was selfed (not sure yet if it took). The other bloom
was crossed to another interspecific hybrid from a SDB
x I. sauveolens cross. This second pod appears to be setting seed - though time
will tell. Pollen shed was good so the big Bumble Bee around
here with the tweezers scattered pollen as far as it would stretch. Perhaps
pod or pollen route will eventually produce a second generation seedling,
though I sure hope it takes less than 8 years this
time !
Anyone out there in iris species land
have experience with this primary cross ?
