Re: Gladious communis

Hi Jim,
I grow this Glad as well and have tried the other species? or at least what goes by another name of these small hardy Glads and they do look very very similar. They are indeed hardy, however, and come through our winters which can go down to minus 40 with long stretches in the minus 30s often with very little snow cover.
I have often wondered if there was any chance of some hybridizing with some of the less hardy species.

Here are a couple nice large flowered seedlings of Gladiolus communis.
The color is very similar but the markings do vary somewhat. These are  much
larger then the G. communis I have gotten from dutch bulbs as hardy glads.
I am not 100% certain of the species name but think I have it correct.

Gladiolus communis # 1

Gladiolus communis # 2
