RE: Gladious communis


 

Dear Jim
G. communis is often confused with G. italicus and G. byzantinus: each one is sometimes considered subspecies of something else.
I have seen these three species and are really different each other in shape, color, size and (especially!) in the seed shape.
 
I guess the dutch bulbs are G. italicus as I see frequently in commerce.
To have more confusion, there are some other species described in the italian flora: G. palustris, guepinii, vexillaris, inarimensis, illyricus, imbricatus, dubius. Which seems to be really similar each other, except for few species and for their distribution.
I've found only two species in the wild: the so common G. italicus and the really rare G. communis.
