RE: species blooming in Colorado today

David Ferguson's description of the typical higher Rocky Mountain growing conditions match very closely those the upper Sierra Nevada in California where Iris missouriensis also lives. And the conditions are similar down near sea level in coastal Central California where Iris longipetala (or, if you prefer, Iris missouriensis longipetala) grows wild - except that down along the coast it grows right close in among the grasses in pasture-like grasslands. Someone having difficulty growing the montane varieties might consider trying plants from a lowland source.
