Re: Iris tenuis NOT [2 Attachments]

For a comparison with an actual Iris tenuis, I'm attaching two photos. These were taken in Miller's Manor Gardens during a bus tour for the Region 13 Spring Meeting of 2018. I had never seen this species in bloom but, based on photos, I was pretty sure of its identity before getting close enough to read the tag. While Iris tenax has blooms in various shades of purple, lavender and yellow, I. tenuis has white flowers. The haft of the fall is folded into a trough with a prominent ridge down the middle. This species had traditionally been classified as a crested iris, although people have noted a similarity to flowers in the series Chinensis.

I had a similar experience with my first bloom on an "Iris tenuis" SIGNA 15CR028 a few weeks ago:

I already shared this photo with Jim Waddick. The flower does remind me of Iris tenax and that species grows in north central Oregon. The form of the spathes and the medium length floral tube don't fit the species particularly well. Iris chrysophylla also grows in that area. In his 1959 publication, "Hybridization and Speciation in the Pacific Coast Irises", Dr. Lee Lens lists natural hybrids between the two species. Maybe this iris has some of each species in its background, although I guess the leaves are a bit wide for either species. It seems that wild plants don't always read the species descriptions.

We purchased Iris tenuis seeds from what we thought was a reliable source. The oldest (one year) seedling has flowered. Jim and I think it is Iris tenax.

Just a warning, Jim Waddick donated seeds of this to the Seed Exchange in 2018 (18CR027) WC type locality, Clackamas Co., OREGON. No good deed goes unpunished!
