Re: differences between chinese irises

Ken; Sorry I don't always catch every e-mail immediately. The shiny leaved plant I would suspect to be japonica and I believe the confusa from Darrel is probably correct. Chen Yi is notorious for misnaming plants.

Subject: Re: [iris-species] differences between chinese irises

Bob, Fillipo, and any others who are interested,
I have two clones of I. confusa, or what is supposedly that
species. One, which originated with Darrel Probst, has dull, almost
glaucous, arching foliage; the other, originating from Chen Yi, has more
upright, bright green, shiny foliage. Zhao says in "Iris of China" the
leaves of this species are yellowish green, both surfaces somewhat
glaucous. I have bloomed both & the flowers are white and pretty
similar, I think, although they have not both been in bloom at the same
time. Both have canes. Are these within the normal variation of the
species, or is one an impostor or hybrid? I am certainly more likely to
trust Darrel's attribution. Any help here?
Following Darrel's directions for growing this species, I give it as
much sun as I can, which is not easy for me in winter, and plenty of
water. Always, the tips of the foliage turn brown, which kind of spoils
the look of the plant. They have flowered for me in about March, or
not, for reasons I can't figure out. Also, they will sometimes flower
outside in summer. If any one has some culture tips they can share, I'd
be grateful.
