Re: Iris kaempferi mandschurica

Jim,
Obviously Iris kaempferi mandschurica refers to Iris ensata clones grown in Mandschuria. Chinese Mandschuria is in USDA zone 3, so continental clones of Iris ensata are much more hardy than japanese ones. At least they grow here in zone 3 without problems and in StPetersburg in zone 4-5 but with more colder summer.
By the way a photo of G.Rodionenko with his JI 'Diadia Stiopa' - very tall.

I wonder if someone could tell which iris this name once referred to.  It is in an quite an older book written for plants for the prairies.  In it, it states that the species kaempferi is not hardy on the prairies, but the variety? can be grown given suitable conditions.  I assume this refers to the species ensata, but variety mandshurica?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim in Saskatoon
