I have not had any luck in VA. You can get them up and running from seed but they peter out before they bloom or shortly after. I don't know what the determinative factor is. Probably some would do better than others if one kept plugging away until one found them. The British are said to adore them. It is easy to see why.

Makes a lot of sense, as a generalization.
And some of the water irises fall into that category. There are, or were, a lot of those in the wholesale trade, for the aquatic gardening crowd. I was wondering the other day what happened when some of those LAs that were being sold for eight bucks a pot here there and everywhere a couple of years ago started traveling. I had a manic fulva clone once that I practically had to keep in line with a whip and chair, and that was when grown in soil.
