Apparently it was listed in Journal Royal Horticultural Society in Dec 1911 37:632 as Albopurpurea colchesterensis. And in checklist it also has listing with spelling From: ChatOWhitehall <ChatOWhitehall@aol.com> To: iris-species <iris-species@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tue, Nov 1, 2011 10:15 am Subject: [iris-species] Iris 'Colchesterensis' Well, as I have said elsewhere, I personally find it well to do a little thinking for myself when it comes to relying on the AIS 1939 Check List.
Iris 'Albopupurea', described as a Laevigata, is found on page 88. At the top of the following page is Iris "Albopupurea Colchesterense." which is said to be a synonym of the approved name, Iris 'Colchesterensis,' the entry for which is found on page 170.
However, here is the article which goes with the picture I posted to show the white rims on the falls. It tells the history of the plant and its name.
I don't have a 1910-11 or earlier Wallace catalog here to confirm the spelling as given, but, until proven otherwise, in my mind this trumps the 1939 Check List.
Your mileage may vary; however, if you want to defer to the 39CL, the correct name of the plant apparently is Iris 'Colchesternesis."

I've checked registrations. This was listed in 1939 checklist as Colchesterensis. Mostraosa is listed in 1939 checklist as being a TB There isn't any listing for Albopururea Monstrosa in registration database. 'Monstrosa' series Laevigatea was listed in BIS yearbook 1985 pg 64. Albopurpurea monsrosa was listed in Laurie's Garden catalog 1992. Pictures of the two forms in Laurie's web site show Colchesterensis. as being very dark and no margin. The photo of Monsrosa match the picture of the double I posted, but also matches the original picture in The Garden . So as far as official data and original registration the picture I posted should be Colchesterensis. There doesn't appear to be any official Monstrosa" or "Albopurpurea Monstosa" For sources I used SIGNA Checklist Chuck Chapman From: ChatOWhitehall <C*@aol.com> To: iris-species <i*@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Mon, Oct 31, 2011 7:08 pm Subject: Re: [iris-species] Re:Double 'Albopurpurea Colchesterense,' named and introduced by Wallace in 1911, is seen in this original illustration from The Garden.
