The attached photo was taken on 11/20/15 not 11/30/15. Vic From: iris-species@yahoogroups.com [mailto:iris-species@yahoogroups.com] Patrick, Many thanks for taking the time to comment on the Louisiana iris I discussed in my postings. At the present the consensus seems to be that this iris is âCajun Sunrise.â I am aware that a Louisiana iris clone that had never before bloomed out of season in a growerâs garden will sometimes surprise a grower by doing so and subsequently the grower may never see it happen again. But what I have observed of this iris seems to be different. It appears to have a habit of repeat blooming when well grown. At the present I have 4 plantings (tubs) of this plant, two of which are blooming. At the present the plants in these two tubs have been blooming so far for about a full month. A photo of one of the blooms taken on 11/30/15 is attached. Thanks to all for putting up with my verbosity on this subject. Vic From: i*@yahoogroups.com [i*@yahoogroups.com] Hi, Vic. As the person who suggested that your iris might be âEdith Dupreâ, I concur completely. The second picture you posted clearly showed falls much wider than Edithâs. The color is about right, but the fulva form is all wrong. Iâm posting a picture, just in case anyone believed me before. I have never seen âCajun Sunriseâ rebloom, but many in Louisianas, rebloom is mostly a fluke. There are a few that tend to rebloom sometimes, but I have never encountered one that was consistent. As often as not, an out of season bloom will occur on a variety that has never rebloomed before. The few Louisiana irises that I have grown that are most likely to produce an out of season bloom are strong growers and bloomers. âGreat White Hopeâ comes to mind. I have always consider âCajun Sunriseâ, for all its beauty, to be below average in vigor and increase. Patrick From: i*@yahoogroups.com [i*@yahoogroups.com] Brian, Many, many, thanks for your comments. I believe you are correct that what I have is most, most likely âCajun Sunriseâ rather than âEdith Dupre.â Plate 59 in the Second Edition of The Louisiana Iris shows âCajun Sunriseâ with a yellow halo and yellow style arms like the iris in my garden. And, the bloom in the Plate 59 photo looks almost identical to some of the photos I have of the blooms of the iris in my garden. Also, from what I gather from published photos and descriptions âCajun Sunriseâ has foliage with shorter wider leaves than âEdith Dupreâ and that also appears to be true for the iris I have. And, Ken Durioâs 2001-2002 catalog (Louisiana Nursery Our 51th Year 2001 -2002 Catalog of Daylilies, Louisiana Iris and Other Irises, 118 pp.) lists âCajun Sunrise,â so it was very possible that I mistakenly obtained it from him. The iris in my garden under discussion is the only Louisiana iris I have that sometimes repeat-blooms. My only hesitation to being very sure that what I have is âCajun Sunriseâ is that I found no reference in publications or on the internet that âCajun Sunriseâ may sometimes repeat-bloom. Is anyone aware if it may sometimes do so? . How in the past I overlooked the possibility of what I have being âCajun Sunriseâ is beyond me, as I know that undoubtedly I previously saw the photo and read the discussion of this iris in the Second Edition of The Louisiana Iris. Vic From: i*@yahoogroups.com [i*@yahoogroups.com] Hi Vic, Your last picture looks more like Cajun Sunrise to me- with the yellow spray pattern over the falls and the fuller flower form. The style arms look a bit off, though for Cajun Sunrise- sort of long and narrow looking. But maybe that's because there are 4 instead of the usual 3. Best, Brian Brian Shamblin Athens, Georgia |
