By little holes you mean at the bottom of the rhizomes then you are looking at where the old roots have died off. This is not a problem and to be expected especially if the older rhizome (mother toe) is still attatched.
Planting them depends on zone you are in. If 4-6 then should pot up rhizomes right away and keep in someplace unheated such as unheated garage of garden shed. If in zone 7+ then plant in garden and provide winter protection after ground freezes. If you keep them unplanted they could still survive but will loose some strength.
